Abstract

Psychotherapy is a process in which one or more people share their problems with their therapists. In psychotherapy, individuals transfer information about themselves to their therapist. Confidentiality is one of the important ethical rules that therapists should pay attention in the process of self-disclosure in therapy. In studies, it is seen that confidentiality is one of the most common ethical problem in psychotherapy. Since the first ethical principles, the rules on confidentiality have been very clear and the conceptual definition of confidentiality and limits are explained. For this reason, therapists working in psychotherapy, counseling or evaluation services should consider ethical rules regarding privacy and confidentiality, legal laws, the rules of the institutions and the nature of the professional or scientific relationship. Because the failure to ensure confidentiality seems to harm the positive therapeutic relationship. Regardless of the type of psychotherapy, the confidentiality and its limits should be discussed at the beginning of the therapy. In this context, this review will examine the place and importance of confidentiality, which is a common ethical issue in different types of psychotherapy, such as individual, child, group, spouse and family. Unconditional confidentiality in all types of therapy, from individual therapies with one person to spouse/family or group therapies with more than one person, is one of the basic obligations that therapists must comply with.
